Welcome at "Münsterländer Platt"

Despite the fear of many people the Low German language has survived the 20th century. Although the importance as a common language has been reduced significantly in the Münsterland area too, many people are able to understand the old mother tounge. Nevertheless there are few people left being able to speak Low German. A small glimpse into the situation is given by the lecture of Jens Vorbrink "Die sprachsoziologische Situation im Münsterland".

Countless literature and written articles in the Low German language exists. But as multifarious is the used orthography. It is deplorable that until now no agreement has been found how to write the Low German language. The orthography of the phonetic transcription is mainly influenced by the origin of the authors. Taking this into account, it is not unusual that the same word is written in a different way within the same sentence or that different authors from the same place translate the phonetic transcription in a different way. For the reader these facts may arise a certain confusion and maybe he loses the joy in reading the precious native language. In addition more and more German words are used in the Low German language.

Caused by my love for the wonderful mode of expression in the Low German language and by the fear that this language may die out, I began to write the dictionary "Wörterbuch des Münsterländer Platt".

In this dictionary I fixed clear and simple rules for the orthography of the Low German language and use them consistently for all words (see Orthography of the Low German Language and Accentuation and Pronouncing). On 490 pages, this book offers the reader a source of more than 20,000 notions and phrases (see sample pages German-Low German and Low German-German).
